Description

Pablo Escobar’s infamous grinning mugshot was taken in 1976 after police arrested him and other early members of the Medellin Cartel with 18kg of white paste. At this point, Escobar was rapidly gaining power (and wealth), and he bribed his arresting officers. As a result, the charges against him dropped. Escobar and other cartel members would go on to regularly use bribery and violence to get their way, a strategy Escobar described as: “plata o plomo” meaning “silver (money) or lead (a gunshot).” Though it’s not known for certain why Escobar is smiling, it’s likely because he knew he had the money and influence to escape serious punishment.
